In a little red barn, nestled snugly amongst hay bales, lived three tiny kittens. There was Whiskers, who had the wiggliest nose; Pounce, who loved to leap at dust bunnies; and Patches, with a patch of black fur over one eye. One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon painting the sky in sleepy purples and oranges, a cool breeze swept through the barn. The kittens shivered a little. They were used to being warm, all snuggled together or curled up on Mother Cat’s soft fur.

Mother Cat was out for a moment, off on important cat business like exploring shadows and twitching whiskers at faraway sounds. The three kittens huddled closer, their small bodies pressing together like warm fuzzy peaches. "It feels a bit chilly," squeaked Whiskers, his whiskers twitching nervously. Pounce stopped batting at a errant piece of straw. Patches tucked his paws under his body, trying to keep them warm.

Suddenly, Pounce spotted something near the barn door. It was a basket! It looked like it had been left by the farmer's child. What was inside? Pounce, being the bravest, crept over, followed closely by Patches, and then Whiskers, who peeked cautiously from behind Patches.

Inside the basket was a pile of soft, colorful things. Reds, blues, greens, and yellows. They were different shapes, with little thumb bumps. The kittens had never seen anything like them before. They sniffed them. They batted at them gently. They were soft and smelled faintly of sunshine and laundry soap. What could they be for?

Pounce, always curious, tried to wear one on his head like a tiny hat. It flopped over his eyes. Whiskers tried to chase one as if it were a mouse, but it didn't scurry. Patches, being the most practical, nudged one with his nose. He noticed how wonderfully soft and warm it felt against his fur.

"Hey!" purred Patches. "These feel warm!" He carefully stepped onto the pile of soft things. It felt much warmer than the cold barn floor. Whiskers and Pounce, seeing Patches looking so cozy, decided to join him. They nestled down amongst the colorful items. There were so many! Enough for all three of them to burrow into.

They discovered that if they curled up *inside* the soft things, their paws stayed extra warm. They pulled the soft fabric around themselves. "It's like a warm hug!" purred Whiskers, no longer feeling nervous. Pounce stopped looking for things to bat and just purred with contentment.

They realized these soft, colorful things were perfect for keeping warm! They didn't know they were called mittens, left accidentally by the farmer's daughter, but they knew they were wonderful. They snuggled together in the basket of mittens, a pile of warm, purring fur and colorful fabric. They had found a new way to feel cozy when Mother Cat wasn't there to cuddle.

Finding the mittens was a happy accident, and learning to share the warmth of the basket made them feel even closer as friends. They learned that sometimes, strange new things can bring unexpected comfort, and sharing what you find makes everyone feel better. And so, three little kittens drifted off to sleep, surrounded by softness and warmth, dreaming colorful dreams about mittens.
