Slow and Steady Wins: A Sloth's Bedtime Adventure

« Back to Topic

Shelby the sloth was, well, slow. Really slow. All the other animals in the rainforest zoomed and leaped and scurried, but Shelby took his time with everything. Eating a leaf? A whole hour. Moving to a new branch? Most of the day! Sometimes, the other animals would giggle. “Look at Shelby, still on that branch!” they’d call. Shelby tried to hurry, he really did, but it just made him clumsy and he’d often tumble, which wasn’t very fun.

One sunny morning, Old Man Toucan announced a problem. “The rainbow berries are ripe!” he squawked. “But they’re on the highest branch of the tallest kapok tree! Someone needs to collect them for the rainforest feast tonight.” All the speedy monkeys volunteered, but the branch was too thin and wobbly for their quick movements. They bounced and swayed, nearly falling with every grab.

The nimble jaguars tried next, but their powerful paws just cracked the branch a little more. “It’s no use!” cried a little marmoset. “The branch will break before anyone can reach the berries!” Everyone was starting to feel discouraged. Shelby, who had been watching quietly, slowly raised his paw.

“I… I could try,” he offered, his voice barely a whisper. The other animals looked at each other in surprise. “Shelby? But you’re so… slow!” said a monkey. Shelby’s cheeks turned a little pink, but he remembered what his mama always said: “Being you is perfect, Shelby.” He took a deep breath and began his climb.

Because Shelby moved so slowly and deliberately, he didn’t wobble the branch. Each grip was careful and steady. He didn’t rush, he didn’t bounce, he simply… climbed. It took a long time, much longer than anyone expected. The sun began to set, painting the sky in beautiful oranges and purples.

Finally, Shelby reached the rainbow berries! He gently plucked them, one by one, and carefully placed them in a woven leaf-basket. The other animals cheered! When he finally climbed back down, it was almost dark, but he had saved the feast.

Old Man Toucan landed on Shelby’s head. “You did it, Shelby!” he said proudly. “Your slowness wasn’t a weakness, it was your strength! You were the only one who could reach the berries without breaking the branch.” The monkeys and jaguars apologized for teasing him, and Shelby smiled. He realized that being himself, even if it meant being slow, was a wonderful thing.

That night, as Shelby munched on a rainbow berry, he felt happier than ever. He learned that patience and taking your time could help you achieve anything, and that helping others is the sweetest reward of all. And as he drifted off to sleep, nestled amongst the leaves, he knew that even a slow sloth could make a big difference in the world.
