Ollie the Octopus Learns to Share His Treasures

« Back to Topic

3 min read ・ Age 8

Ollie the octopus lived in a beautiful coral reef, and he *loved* collecting treasures. Not gold or jewels, but interesting shells, smooth sea glass, and anything that sparkled! He had a secret cave, and it was overflowing with his finds. Ollie thought his collection was the best in the whole wide ocean, and he didn’t like anyone even *looking* at it, let alone touching it.

His best friend, Shelly the seahorse, often tried to visit. “Ollie, can I see your treasures today?” she’d ask. But Ollie would quickly hide the entrance to his cave with a curtain of seaweed. “Not today, Shelly! I’m… organizing!” he’d call back, even though he was usually just admiring his collection all by himself.

One day, a little pufferfish named Pip swam by, looking very sad. “What’s wrong, Pip?” asked Shelly. Pip explained that he was trying to build a beautiful garden around his anemone, but he couldn’t find anything sparkly to decorate it with. He wanted it to be extra special for his mama’s birthday.

Shelly looked at Ollie’s seaweed curtain. She knew exactly where to find some sparkle. She gently nudged Ollie. “Ollie,” she said, “Pip needs some shiny things for his mama’s birthday garden. You have *so* many beautiful treasures. Maybe… maybe you could share a few?”

Ollie’s eight arms wiggled nervously. Share his treasures? The thought made his suckers tingle uncomfortably. He loved his collection! But then he looked at Pip’s sad face, and he remembered how good it felt when Shelly complimented his finds. Maybe sharing wouldn’t be so bad.

Slowly, Ollie pulled back the seaweed curtain. Pip’s eyes widened. “Wow!” he gasped. “So many sparkly things!” Ollie, feeling a little shy, offered Pip a handful of shimmering sea glass and a particularly beautiful shell. “You can use these for your mama’s garden,” he mumbled.

Pip’s face lit up. “Thank you, Ollie! This is the best birthday gift ever!” He zoomed off to decorate his garden, and Shelly and Ollie swam along to help. As they arranged the treasures around the anemone, Ollie felt a warmth spread through him. It felt… even better than admiring his collection alone.

Pip’s mama arrived, and she was overjoyed with the beautiful garden. She thanked Ollie for his generosity. Ollie realized that seeing Pip and his mama so happy made his treasures even more special. He wasn’t just collecting shiny things; he was collecting happy memories.

From that day on, Ollie still loved his treasures, but he loved sharing them even more. He opened his cave to his friends, and they would all admire the collection together. He learned that the best treasures aren’t the ones you keep hidden away, but the ones you share with those you care about. And every night, as he drifted off to sleep amongst his sparkling collection, Ollie smiled, knowing he had the best friends – and the happiest heart – in the whole ocean.
