3 min read ・ Age 4

Once upon a time, in a cozy little farmyard, a mother duck was waiting for her eggs to hatch. One by one, fluffy yellow ducklings peeked out! But one egg was much bigger, and it took a long time to crack. Finally, out waddled a duckling… but he didn’t look like the others. He was bigger, and his feathers were a funny grey color.

The other ducklings teased him. “You’re so clumsy!” they quacked. “Your feathers are strange!” The poor little duckling felt very sad. He tried to play with them, but they wouldn’t let him. Even the other animals on the farm seemed to stare. He felt like he didn’t belong anywhere.

Feeling lonely, the little duckling ran away. He wandered through fields and forests, hoping to find a friend. He met some geese, but they were too bossy. He met some chickens, but they were too busy pecking at the ground. Everywhere he went, he felt different and out of place.

Winter came, and the little duckling was very cold and alone. He shivered and wished for a warm place to stay. He huddled near a frozen pond, feeling very sorry for himself. He wondered if he would ever find a place where he was welcome.

Then, one beautiful spring day, he saw a group of graceful birds swimming on the pond. They were the most beautiful birds he had ever seen! He slowly swam towards them, expecting them to laugh at him, too. But they didn’t! They welcomed him with open wings.

“Welcome!” they called. “You’re one of us!” The little duckling looked at his reflection in the water and gasped. He wasn’t an ugly duckling at all! He had grown into a magnificent swan! He finally understood why he looked so different – he wasn’t meant to be a duckling. He was a swan!

He swam happily with his new family, feeling proud and loved. He learned that it’s okay to be different, and that true beauty comes from within. He realized that being yourself is the most wonderful thing you can be. And as the sun set, he drifted off to sleep, knowing he had finally found where he belonged.

From that day on, the swan lived happily with his family, remembering that even when things seem hard, kindness and self-acceptance will always lead you to where you need to be. Now close your eyes, little one, and dream sweet dreams of finding your own special place.
